Many of the postings to the Historic Pelham Blog have dealt with John Hunter and his island in the Town of Pelham known as Hunter's Island. For a few such examples, see:
Fri., Dec. 2, 2005: John Hunter of Hunter's Island in Pelham, New York
Thu., Apr. 27, 2006: Burial Place of John Hunter (1778 - 1852) of Hunter's Island
Wed., Dec. 14, 2005: New Information About John Hunter's Acquisition of Hunter's Island in the Manor of Pelham
Today's Historic Pelham Blog Posting publishes an image of a sketch of John Hunter's Mansion on Hunter's Island. It shows the mansion in 1853 and appears immediately below.
The sketch shows the mansion nestled among trees at the peak of the island. In the foreground is a group of cattle. Behind them, a sweeping lawn climbs up the hill to the foot of the mansion.
This item, from the collection of The Office of The Historian of The Town of Pelham, is affixed to a stiff piece of cardboard beneath which are written the following words: "The Mansion Hunters Island, New York. ~ in 1853".
