Brief Report of August 29, 1904 Trolley Accident on Wolfs Lane

On August 29, 1904, a trolley derailed at the corner of Wolfs Lane and East Third Street in Pelham.  One passenger suffered injuries.  A brief report of the accident appeared in the "Twenty-Second Annual Report of the Board of Railroad Commissioners of the State of New York 1904".  The report is transcribed below.

"ACCIDENTS.
XCIV.
IN THE MATTER OF A DERAILMENT OF A PASSENGER CAR OF THE WESTCHESTER ELECTRIC RAILROAD IN PELHAM, AUGUST 29, 1904.

September 22, 1904.

Report by Electrical Expert:

I have investigated an accident which occurred on the Westchester Electric Railroad, operated by the Union Railroad Company, and submit the following:

August the 29th, 1904, at 10:10 p.m., open car, Phillip Barry, motorman, and Lewis Neustadt, conductor, running from Pelham to Mount Vernon, left the track at the corner of Wolf's Lane and East Third Street, Pelham.

At the point of derailment the single track is constructed through the center of Wolf's lane, practically level, on a fifty foot radius curve.  The track is in good condition.

The car was an open, single truck, one with eight benches.

At the time of the accident there were four passengers on the car, one of whom was injured.

After derailment car ran forty feet striking a tree and fence.  Front stanchions and dash bent on car.  The weather was clear at the time of the accident.

The cause of the derailment was a broken flange, which was broken on the run on which the accident occurred.

A copy of this report was sent to the company.  (Street Case No. 37-1904.)"
