Obituary of Noted Pelham Manor Resident C. H. Roosevelt Published in 1901

C. H. Roosevelt was a well-known attorney and grandson of Elbert Roosevelt, one of the early settlers of the Manor of Pelham.  C.H. Roosevelt died at his Pelham Manor home on March 24, 1901.  Below is his obituary that appeared in the March 30, 1901 issue of the New Rochelle Pioneer.

Another of New Rochelle's former well-known and respected citizens, whose life has been closely identified with the place, died at his late residence in Pelham Manor, Sunday evening last.  He had been in ill health for several months, and while fully realizing his precarious condition, continued to look after his business and had every detail perfected when death took him.

Mr. Roosevelt was born in 1832.  He was the son of the Rev. Washington Roosevelt, a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, and a grand-son of Elbert Roosevelt, who was one of the early settlers of the manor of Pelham-on-the-Sound.  The family is related to Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt.

Mr. Roosevelt studied law in Poughkeepsie, where his father was at one time stationed.  After his marriage in that city to Miss Jackson he came to New York and began the practice of law.  He was well known as a practitioner in Westchester county, and at the time of his death had offices at No. 203 Broadway.  He was the manager of many large estates, and owned valuable real estate in Pelham Manor and this city.  The family for many years were the largest real estate owners in Pelham Manor.

He was a member of the State and County Bar associations, the WestChester Bar Association, the St. Nicholas and Holland societies and Huguenot Lodge, F. and A. M., of New Rochelle.

Deceased had resided in this city for many years.  For four years he was Supervisor of the extinct town of New Rochelle, having been elected as the Democratic nominee in the years 1884-85 and again in 1887-88.  He at different other periods held local offices. 

As a lawyer he was universally known among judges and jurists of well known reputation.  His funeral took place from Christ Episcopal Church, Pelham Manor, Wednesday morning and was largely attended, many prominent lawyers and persons of note in county, city and state being present.  The services were conducted by Rev. A. F. Terney, rector of the church.

Huguenot Lodge, 46, F. and A. M., of which deceased was a member, attended in a body at Beechwood Cemetery, where the interment was made, the impressive services of the Masonic ritual were performed.

Deceased leaves a widow and one son, Elbert C., surviving him."
